A Country Christmas Rolls Down East Main: The 2026 Parade Guide

Murfreesboro's Christmas Parade has a route that has not changed in more than 40 years, a start time everyone in town knows, and, as of this month, a new theme. The 2026 parade rolls on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m., and this year's theme is “A Country Christmas.” Registration for floats and other entries is already open. Here is how the day works, and how to be part of it.

The route, block by block

The parade is always held on the second Sunday in December. It begins on East Main Street at the entrance to Middle Tennessee State University, then heads roughly 1.5 miles west toward the historic Rutherford County Courthouse. From there, the procession travels halfway around the downtown square and ends on West Main Street at its intersection with North Walnut Street. Fire trucks and other first responders lead the way, followed by the Grand Marshal, who has not yet been selected for 2026. Lynn Caldwell of the Parks and Recreation Department says the announcement is expected soon.

Thousands of children, parents and other spectators are expected to line both sides of East Main Street, with some of the largest crowds traditionally gathering near Central Magnet School and around the square. The square itself is in the middle of a local conversation about a possible National Register district, which makes the courthouse backdrop a little more notable this year. For many kids, the day's biggest moment is still the last one: Santa Claus traditionally brings the parade to a close aboard the final float.

What judges are looking for

The parade is also a friendly competition. Judging takes place as entries line up before the procession begins, and there are seven award categories:

  • Best Business Float
  • Best Church or School Float
  • Best Scout, Civic or Social Group Float
  • Best in Show
  • Best Antique Car
  • Best Performance, which recognizes dancing, cheerleading and other coordinated routines
  • Best Marching Band

How to enter

Businesses, churches, schools, civic groups and other community organizations are encouraged to register through the official registration site, which is linked from the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation parade page. Registration is open through Friday, Dec. 4. An earlier listing gave Dec. 7 as the outside deadline, but organizers advise applying by Dec. 4 so approval comes through in time, so treat the 4th as the date that counts.

The entry categories are built for groups of every size:

  • Floats: one vehicle pulling a decorated float, with the combined entry limited to 45 feet in length.
  • Walking groups and street performances: think dance teams and cheerleading squads.
  • Antique vehicles: welcome as long as they are at least 45 years old.
  • Horses: each horse must be registered separately.

Plan your afternoon

If you are watching rather than marching, the route gives you choices: the long stretch of East Main near MTSU, the busy block by Central Magnet School, or the square, where the procession turns toward its finish. Check city announcements closer to the date for any traffic changes along East Main. Last year's theme was “A Sweet Christmas,” so a country twist should make this year's floats easy to spot.
