A Family Day in Murfreesboro: Museums, Playgrounds and Farm Fun

Murfreesboro is an easy town to tackle with kids. The big hits sit close together, several are indoors for rainy or scorching days, and the best outdoor spots come with paved paths for strollers and scooters.

This plan mixes a hands-on museum, a castle playground, a nature center with live animals and an indoor water park in town, plus an adventure center in Smyrna and a farm park in Eagleville for a special outing. Most stops suit toddlers through tweens, while the climbing walls and the skate park are made for older kids.

Discovery Center at Murfree Spring

Downtown, Southeast Broad Street · 502 SE Broad St., Murfreesboro, TN 37130

Rutherford County's hands-on children's museum is built for touching everything. Kids can shop a pretend farmers market, captain a simulated jon boat, climb aboard a fire truck, run a train depot and get messy in the art studio. The Great Outdoors gallery has a pretend campfire for story times, and the Tiny Town streetscape includes a concrete-mixing zone for budding builders. Weekly programs such as Turtle Talk bring out the resident animals.

Tip: Step outside afterward to look over the Murfree Spring wetland next door, a favorite with birdwatchers. If the kids still have energy, Patterson Park's indoor pool is just a few blocks away.

Old Fort Park

West Murfreesboro · 1025 Old Fort Pkwy., Murfreesboro, TN 37130

This 50-acre city park is home to the Kids' Castle playground, a local favorite for climbing and make-believe, plus a skate park and pump track for older kids on wheels. A big picnic pavilion, restrooms, open lawn and greenway access make it easy to stay a while, and bikes and scooters are welcome on the paved greenway that runs past the park.

Tip: Follow the short spur trail to the Fortress Rosecrans earthworks inside the park and let the kids picture a real Civil War fort that once covered more than 200 acres.

Wilderness Station at Barfield Crescent Park

South Murfreesboro · 401 Volunteer Road, Murfreesboro, TN 37128

The city's nature center sits at the edge of Barfield's backcountry and keeps education animals, including owls, a hawk and snakes, plus a gift shop stocked with nature toys and books. Outdoor Murfreesboro runs classes and family programs here, and the paved TreeMendous Tree Trail starts nearby, with 12 numbered stations along its first 0.7 mile.

Tip: Pick up a Tree Trail map inside or pull up the interactive guide on your phone, and save time for one of Barfield's two playgrounds on the way out.

Patterson Park Community Center

Southeast of downtown · 521 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Murfreesboro, TN 37130

When it is too cold, wet or hot for the playground, this city community center's indoor water park saves the day. Little ones splash in the zero-depth pool with its play equipment, while bigger kids line up for the triple-loop slide. Parents get a whirlpool, and between swims the center has a game room and an indoor walking track.

Tip: Open swim times shift with the seasons and school breaks, so check the pool schedule first. The center's theater also stages family-friendly shows.

Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center

Smyrna · 100 Sam Ridley Pkwy. E., Smyrna, TN 37167

Smyrna's parks department runs this indoor hub for active kids, with 20-foot climbing walls, a cargo-net climbing structure, hands-on children's exhibits and local art, plus nature and science programs on the calendar. Traveling exhibits rotate through, so repeat visits often turn up something new, and in summer the center rents kayaks, canoes and paddleboards.

Tip: Climbing has age and weight minimums and requires closed-toe shoes, so check the rules before you promise anyone the wall. Neighboring Lee Victory Recreation Park adds two big playgrounds and a 1.25-mile walking trail.

Lucky Ladd Farms

Eagleville · 4306 Rocky Glade Road, Eagleville, TN 37060

Out in the countryside near Eagleville, this farm park bills itself as Tennessee's largest petting farm, with hundreds of animals, pony rides and a parakeet aviary. A fun park of nearly 60 acres adds playgrounds, slides and wagon rides, and the seasons bring tulips, strawberries, sunflowers, pumpkins and a Christmas light show. Cedar glade nature trails and behind-the-scenes animal encounters give older kids more to do than the petting pens.

Tip: The farm opens for seasonal festivals rather than year-round, so check the calendar and buy tickets online ahead of time; tickets at the gate are not guaranteed.

Plan it

Downtown makes a good base: the Discovery Center and Patterson Park are a few blocks apart, and Old Fort Park is a short drive west. Barfield sits on the south side of town, Smyrna is a quick hop northwest on I-24, and Eagleville is a pleasant country drive to the southwest. With only half a day, pair the Discovery Center with Old Fort Park.

On a rainy day, lean on the museum, the indoor pool and the adventure center, and save the farm and playgrounds for dry weather. Pack snacks and a change of clothes for anyone likely to get soaked, and check current hours before you go, since programs and seasons shift.
