Family Halloween in Murfreesboro 2026: A Parent’s Guide

Halloween in Rutherford County does not have to mean one frantic night of door-knocking. Between the city parks, the Discovery Center, the library branches, Stones River and a handful of churches, there is something on nearly every day from mid-October through the 31st, and most of it is free. Here is a parent's guide to the family-friendly side of the season, sorted by what your crew is in the mood for. Every listing links to its event page, so check there for the latest details before you go.

The big free festivals

  • Barfield Bash Halloween Carnival (Friday) (Fri., Oct. 23, 5 p.m.). The city's Halloween carnival at Barfield Crescent Park, with a trick-or-treat trail, ballfield activities and food trucks. Entry is free, and games and some activities are ticketed. It runs again the next night.
  • Barfield Bash Halloween Carnival (Saturday) (Sat., Oct. 24, 5 p.m.). Night two of the carnival. One parent tip: the city flags the scarier hayride at the Bash as possibly too much for small children, so steer little ones toward the gentle one below.
  • 50th Annual Harvest Days at Cannonsburgh Village (Sat., Oct. 24, 10 a.m.). The 50th edition of the pioneer-village fair, with blacksmithing and craft demonstrations, clogging, live music and food trucks. Not strictly Halloween, but a classic fall Saturday.
  • Goblins and Goodies at the Park in La Vergne (Sat., Oct. 24, 12 p.m.). La Vergne's park party, with a candy trail, a zombie dance and a costume contest by age group.
  • Halloween in the Park in Smyrna (Sat., Oct. 24, 3 p.m.). Smyrna's afternoon at Sharp Springs Park, with candy booths, inflatables, games and costume contests.
  • McFadden Fall Festival and Haunted Hallways (Thu., Oct. 15, 5 p.m.). A free all-ages fall festival with a haunted hallway, a DJ, food and carnival games.

A few quick parent tips: bring a flashlight for anything after dark at Cannonsburgh or the Wilderness Station, pack a jacket because late-October evenings drop fast, and register early for the Discovery Center and Wilderness Station programs, which fill. We will keep adding events to our family calendar as organizers post them.
