Lt. Hutsell selected to American Jail Association Board of Directors

Sheriff’s Lt. David Hutsell of the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center was selected to be a board member of the American Jail Association.

Hutsell was nominated by AJA Past President Marsha Travis of the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office and Jail Administrator Reese Walker of the Shelby County Division of Corrections.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Kevin Henderson supported Hutsell’s nomination.

Hutsell pursued his participation of AJA’s certification for himself and the staff, the deputy chief said. Under his leadership, about 50 percent of the Adult Detention Center staff earned national jail certification officers’ status.

“I know the hard work and dedication he puts forward to everything he does,” Henderson said. “This is a well-deserved award of a person who embodies the concepts of corrections, integrity, teamwork and leadership.”

Hutsell has worked in corrections for almost 25 years, starting his career at the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. He joined the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office in 2002. He now serves as administrative lieutenant where his duties include leadership development and handling policies and procedures.

He became a certified jail manager from AJA. He graduated from the National Institute of Corrections executive warden course and the National Jail Leadership Command Academy Class 24.

The Tennessee Corrections Institute selected Hutsell as the Training Officer of the Year in 2023.

Hutsell is an MTSU graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications.
