“Playful Paper” Exhibit at MTSU Explores the History of Paper-Based Games and Toys
From ancient Egyptian board games to 20th-century pop-up books and paper dolls, Playful Paper highlights the colorful world of paper-based play in Special Collections at James E. Walker Library, Middle Tennessee State University. On display through December 12, the exhibit features vintage and replica toys, games, and books that are both entertaining and educational.
“Game playing goes back almost as far as human history,” said Susan Hanson, Special Collections curator. “This exhibit shows how games and toys, like books and newspapers, have historically spread knowledge and brought people together.”
Visitors can explore unique items such as a version of the ancient Egyptian game Senet, a vintage Monopoly set, a functional pinhole camera pop-up book, Victorian-era post office games, toy theaters, interactive activity books, and even paper doll series like Little Fanny. One highlight, The Parlor Race, blends Charles Dickens’ characters with horse racing, illustrating Victorian-era entertainment.
The exhibit draws from the Dimensional and Artists’ Books Collection, with artifacts dating back to the early 19th century. Physical games continue to have a place in modern life, with a tabletop board game club at MTSU meeting regularly in the library.
