Rutherford County Republican Party Sheriff Debate 2026
Three candidates running for Rutherford County Sheriff took the stage during the Rutherford County Republican Party debate to share their vision for the future of law enforcement in the county.
Lieutenant Kenneth Barrett, Trey Mansfield, and Steve Spence each delivered opening statements outlining their backgrounds, experience in law enforcement, and priorities if elected sheriff. The candidates discussed major issues facing the county including deputy recruitment and retention, jail overcrowding, public safety, homelessness, immigration cooperation, sex trafficking, and the opioid crisis.
Throughout the debate, each candidate explained how they would support deputies, improve morale within the sheriff’s office, and strengthen relationships with the community. The discussion also focused on the county’s growing population and the need to address challenges such as building a new jail facility and maintaining public safety as Rutherford County continues to expand.
Candidates also answered questions about constitutional responsibilities, transparency in the sheriff’s office, and their plans for their first day in office if elected.
The debate was moderated by Chris Hand of the Chris Hand Show on SuperTalk 97 WTN and was hosted by the Rutherford County Republican Party. The event drew a large crowd in person and thousands more watching live online.
