Sheriff Fitzhugh Promotes Chris Kauffman to Deputy Chief of Law Enforcement

Patrol Capt. Chris Kauffman has been promoted to deputy chief over law enforcement by Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh.

Kauffman brings 34 years of law enforcement experience to the role, including 28 years with the Sheriff’s Office, more than four years with the Murfreesboro Police Department, and 18 months with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

“Chris has proven himself over the years to be a strong and effective leader who always brings new and improved ideas to the Sheriff’s Office,” Fitzhugh said. “I’m extremely proud of Chris and his accomplishments. I know he will bring his experience to the command staff in providing leadership for the men and women under his command.”

During his tenure with the Sheriff’s Office, Kauffman has served as a patrol deputy, narcotics detective, and sergeant. While in narcotics, he was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Task Force. He later became SWAT commander, a role he held for more than 20 years, before being promoted to lieutenant of the training division. For the past three years, he has led the Patrol Division as captain.

A graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, Kauffman began his career in the U.S. Air Force as a security police officer and is a veteran of the first Gulf War.

“I am honored the sheriff has confidence in me to fill this role,” Kauffman said. “I am honored to work with other divisions and continue to meet the standard (retired) Chief Britt Reed set.”
