Camp Is Open on Greenland Drive: Thirty-One Days Until the Blue Raiders Find Out Who They Are
The helmets went back on this week. Middle Tennessee opened fall camp with its first practice of the 2026 season, which means the part of the Murfreesboro calendar that actually organizes the fall — Saturdays at Floyd Stadium — is now officially in motion.
Head coach Derek Mason framed the opening day as foundation-building: the idea that a program should start each August from higher ground than the last one rather than restarting at the bottom of the hill. It is a fair description of where this team sits.
Year three
Mason was hired in December 2023 to follow Rick Stockstill, who had run the program for eighteen seasons — the longest tenure in school history — before a 4–8 finish ended his run. Following someone who was on the sideline for nearly two decades is its own kind of job, and the first two years have been hard: 6–18 across 2024 and 2025.
Which is what makes this camp worth watching. Third seasons are where rebuilds either show up or stop being called rebuilds. Mason arrived with a defensive résumé built at Stanford and seven years as a head coach in the SEC, and the roster he is now working with is largely his.
A program older than the stadium it plays in
It is easy to forget how deep this thing runs. Middle Tennessee has been playing football since 1911. Floyd Stadium — properly Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium — opened in 1933 and now seats 27,303, meaning the Blue Raiders have been playing on that patch of Greenland Drive for over ninety years.
Even the nickname has a paper trail. In 1934 the school ran a contest through the local paper to name its teams. A player named Charles Sarver submitted “Blue Raiders” and collected five dollars for it — a fee that has aged extremely well.
The high-water mark came under Charles “Bubber” Murphy, who coached twenty-two seasons from 1947 to 1968 and went 155–63–8 with four undefeated teams — 1949, 1957, 1959 and 1965. The program has since made fourteen bowl appearances and has played in Conference USA since 2013.
The dates that matter between now and kickoff
August is a series of checkpoints. Media Day lands on the 11th. Fan Day is Saturday, August 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Floyd Stadium, the one open-doors evening on the preseason calendar and the easiest way for a Murfreesboro family to put a kid in front of the roster before the season starts. Classes start the 24th. The first weekly press conference and radio show follow on the 31st.
Then the opener: Saturday, September 5, against Murray State at Floyd Stadium. The athletic department is stacking the night — it is a White Out, and doubles as both Faith and Family Night and Community Night.
Thirty-one days from the first practice to the first snap. For a program in year three of a rebuild, that is either not much time or exactly enough.
