City’s Public Works annual Fall Leaf Collection begins Oct. 12
The City of Murfreesboro’s annual Fall Leaf Collection season begins Oct. 12, 2026, and continues through Jan. 31, 2027. During the peak collection period, residents may place loose leaves and grass clippings curbside for pickup.
Residents can help crews work more efficiently by following these guidelines:
- Keep loose leaves separate from brush, limbs, and other yard debris
- Use only biodegradable paper bags if you choose to bag leaves and grass clippings
- Place tree limbs and brush parallel to the street
- Consolidate debris into one pile only instead of several smaller piles
- Do not place brush longer than 10 feet in length
- Keep brush piles clear of low-hanging power and cable lines to allow room from the boom to work
- Avoid parking your car near the brush pile during daylight hours when crews are working
Under the normal operations and the Solid Waste Ordinance, yard trimmings for curbside pick-up must be placed in biodegradable paper bags available at your local grocery or hardware stores.
However, during peak leaf collection, Oct. 12 through Jan. 31, loose leaves and grass clippings may be placed curbside for collection. Residents should take care not block storm drains or clog storm sewers.
The heaviest volume of the leaf collection typically occurs before the Christmas holiday. Crews will continue collecting leaves through the end of January 2027, as needed.
The Public Works Department combines staff and resources from the Street and Solid Waste departments each fall to improve service efficiency throughout the City.
“The goal is to efficiently and effectively cover the City twice as fast by working as one team, said Street Director Tracy Brown. “The Street Department serves areas north and east of Board Street, while the Solid Waste Department serves the south and west sides of the City.”
The Street Department operates vacuum trucks staffed by a dozen or more crew members, while the Solid Waste Department operates boom trucks with a driver and crewmember to assist with collection.
Collected leaves are transported to Murfreesboro’s Yard Waste Collection & Mulching Facility located at 4765 Florence Rd.
The Yard Waste Collection Facility accepts yard wase and is normally open Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
